This item is made in China! The product works well, and I was able to fix my air conditioner. I would gladly pay an extra five dollars for a capacitor completely made in the United States. This is how we bring back jobs; make it here in the U.S. If I’m unable to find a U.S. manufactured capacitor I would purchase this product again. I am giving four stars because the country of origin was not listed in the advertisement or product description.
Did you know that you can actually buy your own A/C parts and that you don't have to buy them from the shady HVAC repairman? I JUST LEARNED THIS.

So, it's July, and of course the hottest month of the year is the month my A/C decided to stop working. I did some research and determined that I probably needed a new capacitor. I bought this one and it works perfectly! I ended up not having to call the HVAC company, which was kind of a big deal because I feel like every time that guy comes out, I end up out 500 bucks. So, totally get this part-- it saved me a bunch of money!
Works great! My unit started making a terrible noise from the fan motor itself. I tested my old capacitor and it was bad. (bulging and had bad readings on a multimeter). Needless to say this happened on the first 90degree day of the month and it was HOT. It was also Saturday so no AC places were open and hardware stores don't carry these. One day Amazon Prime shipping to the rescue .

Very easy to install, just make sure to discharge your old capacitor before touching it. Then this plops right in!

This unit was a good bit taller than the one I replaced but it still fits just fine. Height doesn't matter, only the specs. Make sure you get the proper MFD rating for your AC unit.

The capacitor not only starts the motor, it's vital to giving the motor steady and even power. A failed capacitor can make the motor sound like it has gone bad. Do not jump to replacing the motor! Replace the capacitor FIRST and see if it fixes it.
I got two of the PowerWell 40/5 MFD +/-6% capacitors. I received them on time and right away I measured them, the values were 40 and 5 MFD on both capacitors, which is fantastic since the values can vary +/-6% and they are still acceptable. The fact that they both were at 40 and 5 MFD was very impressive and it shows these capacitors are of high quality and the manufacturer pays attention to details and quality of their products.

6 years ago, I bought two American made 40 MFD +/-5% motor run capacitors for over twice the price of these Powerwell caps. The nominal values of both caps were at 40.7 and 40.6 MFD which were well within the specified tolerance but I expected for such a high priced caps better quality control. The value should have been at 40 right out of the box. Of course, I installed them and they have been working for the past 6 years without any failure. They were guaranteed for 5 years. I replaced them since I do NOT want any failure in the middle of summer in Phoenix.

As far as Powerwell caps, they have been working in my outside units for only a month. They have not gone through any summers yet. The summers (118 F) are brutal on motor run capacitors. Also, heat and time can change the value of the capacitor. So, my Powerwell caps have NOT gone through the time and the heat test yet. I hope they perform well during Phx's summers. I think they will, based on what I see so far. My outside units (heat pump) run very smoothly so far. I will update this review after a summer or two to let you know how these caps performed during harsh summers of Phx, AZ. At this point, I would definitely recommend them because they are priced very attractively and they have 5 years guarantee. In addition, they appear to be high quality. Also, best of all, they are filled with Caster oil and not PCB.
A capacitor... a simple enough thing... but a litttle daunting when your central air goes out and one needs to be replaced. In the end, it was REALLY easy to remove the old one and replace with this one, which fixed the problem. Literally took a half hour to take the outside unit apart, clean it, remove the old and dead capacitor, put this one in and secure it and put the outside unit back together. Pro tip: make sure you discharge the old capacitor (lots of YouTube videos out there in this)

Description

A capacitor is an electric component that temporarily stores an electrical charge. A dual "run capacitor" supports two electric motors, such as a fan motor and a compressor. Round dual run capacitors are used to start and run the unit more efficient. It saves space by combining two physical capacitors into one case. The dual capacitor has three terminals labeled "C", "FAN", and "HERM", which stand for the *C*ommon, Fan, and *HERM*etically sealed compressor.

Dual capacitors come in a variety of sizes, depending on the capacitance (µF = MFD = micro farad), such as 60 plus 5 µF, and also the voltage. A 440 volt capacitor can be used in place of a 370 volt, as it is build better, but the 370 can’t be used in place of a 440 volt. It will work for a while and will fail prematurely, as exceeding the capacitor's rated voltage will cause the dielectric to break down and the capacitor to short out. Same as an electric wire- 600V rated wire is better than 300V one .The capacitance(µF or MFD or micro farad) must be the same or stay within 10%+ or 5%- of its original value . Example: 40 µF cap can be substituted by 38 - 44 MFD with the same or better voltage ratings capacitor.

If your fan is working but compressor not, or the capacitor is bulged on top most likely your capacitor is defective. Round capacitor can be used to substitute oval shape one with the same MFD AND Volt specs.

You will ask “Why I need a Cap that is rated 440V in my A/C?”

Answer: You need to realize that a motor is an inductive device. When the supply voltage is applied to the motor run winding, the voltage across the start winding will be increased to a higher voltage value. A motor acts like a transformer with the run winding acting as the primary and the start winding acting as the secondary. This is why the capacitor has a much higher voltage rating than the 230 being the supply voltage.

If a Capacitor is not EIA-456-A approved means it is NOT approved for USA market.

My outdoor AC unit wouldn't spin, and replacing my old capacitor with this one brought it back to life. Saved me probably $100+ vs. calling an AC company to come repair.

Note that capacitors store dangerous amounts of electricity even when the power is shut off, so don't touch the prongs on the old capacitor, and be sure to short each prong against the other with a plastic-handled, metal-tipped tool. See YouTube for a video safety explanation. If you have the slightest doubt about how to do a replacement safely then get a pro to replace your capacitor.
Buying through a repairman will cost you 3x more atleast. If you have an AC / SPA, best open compressor housing/ SPA morot cap cover and note values. Most have 2 for AC & just one for spa, a 5 mfd for starting the fan motor and a 40, 50 or 60 etc. for the compressor. Having a spare in the garage can save hundreds of dollars and keep the wife happy if you swap it out and get ac up and running fast. Always kill power from breaker then short common to each of the other leads before touching or removing wires. Very Important!!! Note which color wires go to HERM etc. on the cap, before removal. You don't want to put them on the wrong side! When compressor fan stops working turn off ac immediately to prevent burning out the fan motor or compressor. If you know what to listen for, you can hear the fan running when ac starts up, if it isn't running the cap is probably bad. Alternatively if it is running and ait is hot could be compressor side of cap. I have replaced my AC cap 3x in the last 17 years and my contactor once, but after 20 years the AC is still humming. I used this cap as a temp meaure for my spa pump until the 40mfd caps came in (delayed availability). Worked great and installed the correct one when it arrived 2 weeks later. Did not need the 5 mfd side for spa pump. Now have a spare 40+5.
