We had a furnace inspection recently and the technician let us know the capacitor was starting to show its age and recommended we replace it. He told us the part would be $104.00 plus labor. Right. Sure it does. So while he was working on other stuff, I looked it up on Amazon. Gee, $7.99.... for the same exact part. HVAC companies screw their customers with prices like this. Luckily, the tech said if I was handy I could replace it myself, which I did. Took 5 minutes.... done. It was refreshing to have an honest tech even if the company wasn't so honest. This part is EASY to replace. Do it yourself and save your money for a night out on the town with your significant other.
Great replacement capacitor for a furnace motor. For the price, it was just worth it for me to replace the old one that was starting to leak and have some issues. Measured this with a multimeter and it was pretty spot on at 9.91uF. This is rated at 370VAC, so it should do just fine on my 110V furnace. If your blower motor is starting to have a really bad hum noise when it first starts, that is typically a sign that the capacitor is/has gone bad. The capacitors main job is to provide the ability to deliver a very high amount of discharge amperage to help get the motor going from a stop. Would highly recommend and buy again!
Central air conditioner was freezing up at the refrigerant hoses on the outside compressor and the inside coil entrance. Noticed the fan was not blowing well. I had replaced the fan previously with a new one about 10 years ago and thought it might be the fan dying. However, previously the fan just died without warning. With the freezing up, slow fan and having a topping off of refridgerant my YouTube research lead me to a run capacitor as the cheapest and more importantly easy to replace part. Couldn't check the part with my multimeter as didn't have measurements for microfarads MFD. Since this part was so cheap I didn't think I had much to lose. Bam gets here the next day and AC is back in business without a service call. The fan is blowing so hard you can actually hear the air rushing through the registers. Must have been dying for years without me noticing. My HVAC unit is a Trane that has been going for 18 years.
Exactly what I needed!
Install was simple and took about 5 minutes to switch capacitors out.
In our scenario we found our AC blower all of a sudden started running very sluggish, there was minimal airflow from the vents, air intake wasn't as loud as before, there was minimal cooling, and the pipes outside had about an inch of ice on them. Then after resetting the power to the AC, the AC blower would not kick on at all, but sat there and hummed loudly and shut itself off - originally we thought the motor went bad, but through process of elimination and studying what we could find online, we determined the capacitor had most likely gone bad. After pulling the old capacitor we found the capacitor had actually blown-out and was leaking [see pictures attached]. Rather than call an HVAC technician out with a potential bill of $300, we decided to try the new capacitor which cost me less than my lunch today.
We have a York model G8C10020MUD11A Forced Air with a 110v dual-shaft blower motor.
Recommend following all electrical safety tips and precautions including shutting off power and safe capacitor discharge procedures; And I read where some attempted to get the blower blades/motor going with their hands when the capacitor was bad... are you serious?!? (I used a wooden paint mixing stick, NOT my hand, to test kicking on the blower blades/motor)
What can I say, it works. I like most reviewers ran into the same issue.
You call the HVAC company to do a "checkup" on your unit. Once they arrive and start checking everything out, you are given the news that "hey your capacitor is not testing correctly". And then the "it will be $150 to replace it".
Now I am not here to debate about the price they charge, I understand they have a van, parts, people, insurance, etc to pay for.
However ordering this and installing it is just way too easy. So I would rather buy it and install it myself.
Just some pointers from my HVAC tech, make sure its not bulging or leaking oil, and the life for the capacitor is around 5 years.
So I replaced the capacitor in Jan 2008 (my unit was made in 2005). That capacitor lasted until I replaced it in Sept 2015.
Unit is a (Rudd) Rheem RRKA 10-SEER Series Gas Heat / Electric Cooling
FYI, capacitor is made in Mexico

Power outage took out my blower. Opened it up and checked that it the fan could spin and then test the capacitor: after pulling it from the bracket it was obviously bulging. This replacement part got it running again. Same fit as the GE part it replaced in a Bryant 310jav furnace for me.
If you are going to do this, look up a walkthrough first. Make sure you disconnect power to the unit and discharge the capacitor before you touch it. If you can be safe checking this, it's a simple fix and will save a LOT of money.
Ordered online; arrived in two days; took about 5 minutes to replace by myself; works great!
No more flickering lights in the house when the blower kicks on.
Same brand (Genteq), size, and ratings as what was replaced. The only difference was the location of the sticker on the capacitor. This easy DIY replacement probably saved about $150 versus calling an HVAC specialist.
Replacement consisted of turning off the furnace; removing the front panel (4 screws); removing one screw from the capacitor's harness; transfer of leads from old cap to new cap (taking care not to risk getting shocked by discharge from either cap); secured the new cap in the harness clip; replaced screw; replaced cover; carefully placed old cap in new box; marked as bad (still good enough for emergency backup, as it wasn't completely gone yet); turned the furnace back on; tested for any lights flickering when the blower came on. Success!
